Hi guys, first time poster. At work I was tasked with the job to get a network rendering pipeline setup for 3dsMax 2014.
4 weeks later and I am still running into problems. I tried for a couple of weeks to utilize VRay's Distributed Rendering, but wow(!) it's too unreliable to be useful. So upon recommendation from our reseller I have been attempting to get Backburner to work for me. Basic setup wasn't extremely difficult, and I got scenes using Mental Ray to render out split scan lines.

Now, my boss (the guy who creates all the scenes) uses VRay for all his work. I can't get Backburner to work with VRay because it always errors out due to a licensing issue. I have: -1 i7 3960x workstation -3 i7 3770 render slaves, two are 3770k machines -all machines are on the same network and have static IPs assigned to them -all machines have the correct ports opened up -License server settings (IP shown is the IP of the workstation, User Name/Password boxes are filled in with the username/password of the workstation, screenshot is taken from the slave) The Max file sits on a server that all machines involved have access to, this location is the same place where all the maps/textures are and everything has been given a UNC path in Asset Tracker. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this? I'm at the end of my rope here haha.
I'd head over to the vray forums for vray licensing help. I haven't searched for what that specific error number means, but vray license server has always been pretty stable for me.

You can check the license status of it by going to and see the licenses available, etc. If his machine is getting a license for him to use, the other machines should be able to as well, you probably just need to point them to use the same license server. Either open up max and configure the license server or check C: Program Files Common Files ChaosGroup vrlclient.xml is pointed to the same machine name. OK I got VRay working with Backburner, thanks for pointing me towards the Vray forums. Should have thought of that one myself! Since I hate reading threads without a fix at the end: Open Windows Control Panel, click System and Security.
Click Allow a Program Through Windows Firewall Click the 'Change Settings' at the top, then click the 'Allow another program.' Button Click the 'Browse' button and navigate to 'C: Program Files Chaos Group V-Ray 3dsmax 2014 for x64 vrlservice.exe' and then click the 'Add' button. Click the 'OK' button and that should have opened up the firewall for vrlservice. Took me about 4 weeks to get to that point so hopefully I can help someone down the road save some time.

OK now I am having a new problem. The strips render out fine across all the machines, but when the stitching pass comes up I keep getting these error loading strip messages. (Here is the output folder for this render job. The two folders at the top of the list are unrelated.

(Uploaded with ImageShack.us (Any ideas? I tried to create a new thread over on the chaos group forums but apparently I don't have the permission to. Just wondering why you are rendering strips? Those became obsolete with distributed rendering in vray. Plus you will have a lot of headaches with the light cache not working properly. I see you just went through installing backburner and so on - but i strongly recommend to go for the DR-service. In case you are wondering what i am talking about: it is all a bit tricky - but manageable.
